It’s no surprise at all that Matthew Halsall’s sixth album is a thing of beauty. Tracking his output over the past few years has brought nothing but joy to my ears and heart.

What is different, and provides more accessibility to those perhaps a little wary of more instrumental pieces, is the vocal steering of the ship this time by Josephine Oniyama. Despite only appearing on four of the eleven tracks on the album, Josephine’s contributions are unforgettable and dominate what you’ll be the humming after you’ve heard it. The sublime Bryony Jarman-Pinto, who you might know from Werkha’s recent debut album, also makes an appearance on album closer Jamais Vu.

Matthew’s at the top of his game in regards to the composition and beauty of his work, and the musicians appearing here are some of the best at what they do. Collaborating with Bryony and Josephine amplifies that further, and will hopefully bring fresh ears his way.

Treat yourself. Order the album on vinyl, digital and CD from Gondwana Records’ Bandcamp.
