Premiere / Gaby Hernandez ft Kamasi Washington: Entranced
Gaby Hernandez sees the release of her third album on 9 June, on the reliably and globally soulful Mr Bongo label. Spirit Reflection seeps out of the LA creative explosion, featuring the weighty line-up of Kamasi Washington, Dexter Story (Kelis, The Gaslamp Killer), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Carlos Niño and London-based Brainfeeder artist Lapalux.
Gaby, born and raised in LA but of Chilean descent (so of particular interest to me, being of Chilean descent myself), has been active in the city’s music scene since 2001 and was a founding member of the Build An Ark collective alongside Carlos Niño, Dexter Story and Dwight Trible (currently finishing off a few Euro dates with Gondwana’s Matthew Halsall in celebration of their new album, Inspirations).
She was the only vocalist on Teebs’ debut Ardour, and also made appearances on AmmonContact’s Ninja Tune releases New Birth and With Voices, Dimlite’s Outernational Duet, and The Life Force Trio’s Living Room album on Plug Research.
Spirit Reflection marks Gaby’s debut for the UK-based but world-loving Mr Bongo, a fortuitous meeting at their Arthur Verocai album launch at Rappcats in LA providing an opportunity for David and Graham from the label to meet Gaby and Carlos Niño, subsequently signing the album.
We’re very chuffed to present the first listen to the album’s middle track, Entranced. Pre-order the album from Mr Bongo. Check another track, Lo Mas Dulce, over at famalam Bonafide.
