Review: SOUL SUGAR // HANDS ON EP

Soul Sugar – Hands On E.P

Out on Freestyle comes another tasty treat in the form of Soul Sugar’s E.P Hands On. With a broodingly cool 70’s analogue theme running right through the record Sugar Soul explore some of the more jazz and dub themes of heavy funk on this neat 6 track.
It’s easy to get lost in the amount of organ driven funk bands currently touring and putting out tunes but but Soul Sugar transcend that with an exquisite cover of Theme From King Heroin (and E.P remix of their version) which breathes new life into an old classic. The opening track Witch Doctor is in the same vein, lazy but still keeping the kickin’ drums that some bands just fail to truly provide. For all of the Acid Jazz fans there is a definite nod of the trilby on Hands On and Hit The 5.

It’s good to see a band producing solid funk that isn’t necessarily for the dance floor. I would hazard a guess that they are impressive as a live act nonetheless. Keep an eye on these guys!
