RECORD STORE DAY 2013 – Groovement Recommendations
Record Store Day is Saturday April 20 2013.
Given the usefulness of last year’s RSD list I’ve decided to get another together which picks out those releases most suited to peeps who read Groovement on the regular. My favourite would hands down be the Death Waltz releases I previewed a while back, but I’ve picked out a few more extra special releases as the page scrolls down.
Obviously RSD is bigger than ever now. Personally I won’t be queuing from the night before (as I witnessed a few doing in Manchester last year) but hats off to those that are, doing it for the love rather than the eBay props. Spencer Hickman, founder of Death Waltz and coordinator of the UK Record Store Day shenanigans, recommends thinking of others:
“Here’s a thought. Instead of of letting those eBay scum bags make a profit from Record Store Day why don’t you fine unstanding English folks vinyl buddy up for your Death Waltz cousins across the globe.
If you guys buy extras for our fans overseas and send them to them we’ll make sure you get badges, stickers and t shirts by way of a thank you.
Tell your local store you are buddying up with DW backing.” – Death Waltz Facebook
By the way, I’ve gone with the UK list here. For the full lists see here for UK and here for US. Ideally I would have liked to include more info on number of records in the run, record label etc – but that’s like finding out if it’s a boy or a girl, isn’t it?
And remember folks – every day is record store day.

RODNEY P x RENEGADE BRASS BAND – SUCCESS 7″
Some words from Tru Thoughts:
The undisputed legend of UK music that is Rodney P brings his eagerly awaited first new material in a long time. Here he hooks up with Tru Thoughts’ newest signing, the incredibly talented 21-year-old soul singer Harleighblu, for the A-side on this 7”, a world exclusive release of “Success”; the track also features the great young horn toters the Renegade Brass Band.
The AA-side here sees the first ever vinyl release, by public demand, for “Live Up”, the hugely popular posse cut which was recorded and released digitally by Rodney P with The People’s Army and Mighty Moe on Tru Thoughts, alongside a great and hard-hitting video shot during the major London student protests. Hot on the heels of Rodney’s recent live work with Dub Pistols and his acclaimed outing with Zed Bias and Fallacy as Sleepin’ Giantz, this new solo material brings his unrivalled charisma and flow to the record stores once more.

A1. Alice Russell – Breakdown feat. Darondo**
A2. Harleighblu – Enough Now*
AA1. Hot 8 Brass Band – All I Do**
AA2. Natural Self – The Valleys feat. Tanya Auclair & Milly Blue**
“Breakdown” is an alternative version of a song from Alice Russell’s latest album ‘To Dust’; gaining its first physical release here, this cut brings to light a hidden gem with musical royalty Darondo providing the backup vocals – a match made in soul heaven. “Enough Now” is a super-upfront taster of Harleighblu’s upcoming debut solo album, due to drop in Summer 2013; introducing the lucky RSD buyers to the self-penned work of this burgeoning star who has just turned 21.
Hot 8 Brass Band continue their renowned series of covers with a party version of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do”. A live favourite for the band, previously only given an underground compilation release, the full studio recording makes its way into the limelight here. Natural Self’s inventive and bold cover of Electrelane’s “The Valleys” featuring up-and-coming London based singers Tanya Auclair and Milly Blue on harmonies, has been phenomenally well-received on its release on the latest album ‘Neon Hurts My Eyes’, and appears now on vinyl as a special treat for fans.
