“Callier should be cherished, like love itself” The Independent

Legendary soul troubadour Terry Callier visits The Lowry with a full US/UK backing band for his first tour with a new album in 4 years.

Having recorded since the 1960s, Terry Callier, a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield, grew up singing on the streets of Chicago as a member of several competing doo-wop groups. Chess Records first recorded him in 1963, releasing the single Look At Me Now. Since then his heart-felt jazz and soul-fuelled compositions have delighted fans across the world. His numerous recordings include the classic 1972 album What Colour Is Love and the 1978 album Fire On Ice featuring the soul masterpiece African Violet.

Retiring from music in 1983, his career was reinvigorated in the early 90’s when English acid jazz DJs Gilles Peterson and Russ Dewbury revived dancefloor interest in Callier’s music – echoing his earlier popularity on the 70’s Northern Soul scene. Since then, and following a successful collaboration with Beth Orton, Callier has gone from strength to strength, with a string of critically acclaimed albums and live performances including in 1998 Timepeace, which won the United Nations’ Time for Peace award for outstanding artistic achievement contributing to world peace.

Now touring his new album, Hidden Conversations (Mr Bongo Records) featuring Massive Attack, The Lowry is delighted to welcome this cult soul hero to its stage in a rare UK appearance.
