Groovement Selected: Kid Sublime

Celebrating the release of The Paradigm Shift LP on Natural Element

Amsterdam’s own Kid Sublime has been pushing soulful sound boundaries for over two decades, from dusty MPC hip-hop and deep house burners on Rush Hour, to bruk’d-out jazz experiments and global collaborations under his TurBuLance moniker. His new album, The Paradigm Shift LP on Natural Element, feels like the culmination of that journey: a deeply spiritual and groove-rich statement that bridges house, broken beat, and soul with his unmistakable touch.

To mark the release, Kid Sublime digs deep into his record bag and picks five essential records that helped shape his sound, the blueprint to the emotional depth, MPC swing and raw musicality that define The Paradigm Shift. From the soulful grit of Moodymann to the spiritual fire of Coltrane, the MPC funk of Tribe, and the broken beat energy of Kaidi, each pick reveals a layer of the Sublime DNA.

Dive in below as he shares personal stories and memories behind each of these timeless cuts — and hit play on The Paradigm Shift LP, available now via Natural Element

Moodymann – Mahogany Brown

Heard this first in Amsterdam club Mazzo where Rush Hour was hosting a night… must’ve been 1999/2000.

I just started making  hip hop beats on an MPC…

When this song got played it clicked:

So you can make house music on an MPC, sampling records! Haha!

It sounded like a B-Boy making house music…I felt connected and drawn to KDJ’s sounds and started trying out stuff myself…

John Coltrane – A Love Supreme

Heard this album on the tour bus with Zuco 103 in 1999 in Spain.

They told me I have to listen to this album… wow!

I started crying… I never cried on music ever since.

The gutter, the pain, the depth and also the Joy and Divine all at the same time…

This is what kinda artists I really dig…straight from the soul… unfiltered and raw!

A Tribe Called Quest – Sucka N*gga

Man… A Tribe Called Quest! My fave hip hop group ever!

Midnight Marauders is my Bible… Q Tip started a whole sound and movement in the late 80s… especially this tune off the album always hits me!

Larry Heard aka Loose Fingers – Lementation

Anything by Larry Heard really, but this tune is just nasty!

So much soul in the tune and still sounding super techno and electronic. Huge tune! Still play it out!

Kaidi Tatham / Agent K – Feed The Cat

Hard to pick between Kaidi or IG…

What can I say? Insane classic when the broken beat sound was at its peak… love all of his work… genius musician, such an inspiring sound… you can still play this and people go crazy on the floor! 🙂
