Don Leisure & Gruff Rhys weave a Welsh pyschedelic tapestry on Tyrchu
Tyrchu is the second single to be taken from the upcoming album Tyrchu Sain (translating to ‘Digging Sain’) where Don Leisure taps into the heart of Welsh music whilst challenging and pushing forward his own explorations.
Sain Records is Wales’ oldest independent record label, co-founded by Welsh-language folk singer Dafydd Iwan. The label has painstakingly digitised their entire library spanning 55 years in partnership with the National Library of Wales – upon which they thought it might be a good idea to invite Don to dig into their archives.
PRE-ORDER THE ALBUM HERE – Find out more about the project on iPlayer (click the subtitles if you’re a non-Welsh speaker) in an S4C programme that delves into some of the artists sampled by Don, and here’s is the Finders Keepers page with Welsh Rare Beat.
The single features Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, who recalls Don’s work as:
Shiny new beat-treasures with ghostly reflections of Welsh pop’s past – skillfully dug from Sain Records’ deepest veins’
