Curious to find out more about the next generation hub of Manchester music, I threw a few questions at the collective’s extremely amiable Yemi.
Fill us in on Friday’s event!
This Friday’s event commemorates a year since we first came together as an integrated arts community project. We collaborated with Shudehill studio to create a free entry festival that celebrated music, art, fashion and design in the NQ. It was a great success, and proof to us that creative communities in Manchester need a hub, a network where they can get together to do these things more:
So a year on we’ve done an array of events and shows with a very similar vibe from small and intimate shows to late night events at Kraak.
The M20 Pop-up aims to bring together all the people we have met and collaborated with in the last year, providing a platform for them and for us to show how far M20 collective has come and how much development has been made.
The main short term view is to get arts council funding as a community project. This Friday will be raising money towards the awareness, creative experimentation and execution of M20 collective initiatives, and registration as an official CIC.
What have been your achievements so far? Who have you had involved?
Its hard to say in short who we have worked with, especially without missing out too many people but we’ve worked with Solomon Grundy in Withington and hosted a range of local artist focused live music events at their venue, they’ve been a great help.
We’ve hosted rooms at Pangaea festival with the Manchester University along with MMU art students, and many up and coming MCR urban scene acts and RNCM musicians who are also featuring this Friday.
Not to mention art collectives such as Generic Greeting and Peanut Gallery to name a couple. Our appearance on all.fm raised our profile and got us better connected with the more local side of south Manchester.
We also want to support other collectives; the Secret Garden project is one that we’re keen on backing and raising awareness of, as well as creative workshops for schools in south Manchester.
Our biggest achievement so far I would say is the growth of our following and the fact people are sticking with the initiative and supporting the movement of collectivity and arts.
What do you think you can bring to the Manchester scene?
A better ethos about artistic skills; we believe in creativity not being just one thing. It is expressed in many different ways and all expressions of creativity be them thinking or a physical execution are interconnected and when people get together in an environment that is less about watching and focusing on one thing, and is more about stimulating your sense and socialising along side performance or exhibition, it’s a genuinely great phenomenon that doesn’t get as much attention as it should. It’s devalued almost.
The good news is our movement along with many others is happening more and more everywhere, even before we joined so we just want to help the whole thing from our area.
Do you think there’s enough going on in South Manchester i.e. M20 to call it a scene, or is it all a little too disparate?
There are small communities and groups of people that could do with being better connected and knowing each other, not just in a “bump in to each other at a party way”, but in a let’s do something, let’s start a project, let’s make something together way which needs to happen more everywhere.
We appreciate this is hard, easier said than done, but we hope to provide this platform for people.
Where do you envision M20 Collective being in 5 years time?
It’s hard to say, it’s a development project that grows organically, step by step.
Ideally we would have got funding, found a base and a hub, a space for people to come and connect and enquire about connecting with other people in a creative way from construction of urban spaces, to putting together of live creative arts festivals, and a nationwide presence.
Perhaps expanding into food cultivation and other such creative skills that just a bigger a creative social space with a prominent place in the northern environment. But to get there we need to keep putting on events, raising awareness and spreading the positive vibe that we genuinely believe is more fulfilling than getting any personal financial flourish.
What better way that to get by, keep stimulated, creative and meet new people? We all need to work and pay our rent, but investment in our minds and sociality is much more rewarding.
