MANCHESTER HIP HOP GIGS ROUND UP APRIL / MAY 2013

I’m sat in a bar waiting for Jazzy Jeff twiddling my thumbs, and thought I’d get together a round up of all the live hip hop happening in Manchester over the next couple of months. The scene’s as vibrant as it’s ever been in terms of gigs, with attendance at club nights dependent on the usual factors including location, door prices and whether it’s raining or not. Our own night In The Loop continues monthly at the Roadhouse, with monthly bar sessions of a more funk, disco and hip hop variety over at Terrace. Taste the Diff’rence continue to bubble about in the background, with Noel Edge, Cutterz and Mr E making appearances here and there. Golden Egg is rammed to the hilt each and every down in Fallowfield, with a recent Shelter fundraiser bringing a lot of heads down too. More Bounce continue to book key high quality acts, with a couple of tasty ones featured below. Will Not Be Televised make a return too, with more avenues to be opened in the coming months. Juicy continue to dominate the student crowds, with weekly Wednesdays at Joshua Brooks and monthly ‘event’ events at the Deaf Institute.

So yep, the scene’s healthy. When a few of us held a ‘hip hop meeting’ with a view to starting a new night a few years back, there was a void to be filled. Neighbourhood and In The Loop both emerged around the same time as Taste the Diff’rence and Juicy, so the need was obviously there. 2013 looks hella interesting as nights strive to provide – the Estate Recordings crew are about to rise from the Ballin on a Budget ashes with Play Doubt about to claim Thursdays…

All this and Hot Milk returns to the Roadhouse, Hoya Hoya continues its onslaught on pioneering bass, the Soup Kitchen’s making quality bookings, Red Laser Disco corner the BBQ and handcrafted record label market … too much going on to mention here.
