…? A last minute gig but one of those landmark ones, with only a handful of people to enjoy it. People speak of these guys in hushed tones such is their legendary status, and this band-curated collection is a fitting tribute to their legacy. Order the anthology on ‘bookcase’ CD (with 20 page booklet) or gatefold LP (plus catch previews of the tracks) from Daptone here. Below is a frankly ridiculous preview / cut up from the one and only EDAN.   “Th…

…o of top local MCs Sparkz, Ellis Meade and Dubbul O, with DJ Cutterz. Some people might recognize Sparkz and Dubbul O from Mouse Outfit tracks, but the production style is very different with Voodoo Black – more of an electronic sound. I think they are such a great group – stacks of energy and charisma onstage, and their music is just really, really good. Sivey is an incredible producer as well as a DJ. He met Pete through Louis Den, which is a no…

…s. The meaning of Bewa is Let them come! By playing Bewa in Guo, we’d call people to come and dance and sing. Bekone (The Chief’s Family, They Fight Among Themselves) An insult to the chief’s family and how they neglect the people by fighting among themselves. At the funeral I heard this, Men and women wailed and shouted, one woman in particular danced in spirals, desperate. She ripped her clothes and became naked. At first I felt embarrassed for…

…For us it was a very natural thing- we started out with no PR, it was just people letting their friends in on music that they liked. Now we just continue to use social media to share our experience. It’s been a great journey and it feels like people can relate to the fact that we’re sharing our authentic selves.   Did you find the musical climate evolving as you were making the album? If so, did this influence your sound? The internet has always b…
