Listen: Nautilus – Anna Meredith
Whilst enjoying a quiet evening in, flicking through the TV guide, I notice that the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain are performing a Prom live on BBC 4. I thought – you know what – if nothing else I will be able to tell my dad that I am living an incredibly cultured exsistence here in Manchester.
What I stumbled across was the NYO performing an astonishing piece composed by Anna Meredith, named “Handsfree” which I would highly recommend you watching a video of here – my attention however was caught by the TV presenters final words – “she also composes electronic music”.
This is how I stumbled upon this track, and I am mesmerized by it. It is oddly familiar, with coarse brass that we have come accustom to Hudmo and the like using, and the drums straight out of an 80s power ballad. But trying to relate this to anything is a diservice. All I know is that I am incredibly excited to get stuck into the rest of what Anna Meredith has to offer, in whatever style or genre.
Moral of the story – always try to impress your dad.
Nautilus is the first track from Anna Meredith’s Black Prince Fury EP, due for release on 15 October via Moshi Moshi Records
