RALEIGH MONCRIEF – Watered Lawn

Having worked ‘backstage’ as it were (whether it be in the role of producer or guitarist) over the years for many of his mates, Sacramento producer Raleigh Moncrief steps into the spotlight with debut long player ‘Watered Lawn‘.
Wistfulness is the overriding feeling of the album, gorgeous guitar peppered throughout and lending an air of consistency to a variety of sounds and song structures. While there may never be massive hands-in-the-air pay offs to the amount of bass in the record, you definitely couldn’t accuse Raleigh of being monotonous.
He’s not afraid to treat each track like a larger concept, not sticking with one sole idea for each – this will be either grating or refreshing depending on how much you get drawn into his world. The soundscapes on tracks like Cast Out For Days (probably my favourite) use Aphex-like distortion to a bittersweet end, clashing nicely with the chirpier, noddy intro to Lament For Morning.
A sublime and vintage Anticon package.
