Art: KID ACNE // Kill Your Darlings Exhibition / Sheffield
Kill Your Darlings by Kid Acne
Museums Sheffield: Millennium Gallery (adjacent to Winter Gardens)
21 July – 23 October 2011
I stumbled upon this purely by the power of my Ma today – the Sheffield Winter Gardens is playing host to Kid Acne’s first ever hometown exhibition proper.
Pouring over his sketchbooks would be worth the journey alone, but having a chance to examine his possibly-Frazetta influenced/Vaughn Bode-looking barbarian girls and the giant ouija board top it off. You can also check out the full range of his kidrobot figures, plus some doctored spray cans – most things in the exhibition are for sale, but you can also grab badges, a colouring book and KA comic Zebra Face (written by Sunshine Souljah) when you exit through the gift shop…
Check out a glimpse into the exhibition over at Kid Acne’s blog (better than my staff-evading iPhone job up there).
Exhibition trailer
This exhibition, Kid Acne’s first solo show in his home town,
celebrates the DIY ethic and often transitory approach
he has refined over the years. Murals, illustrations and
sculpture from throughout his career will show how he
has carried the wit and subversion from his days as
a graffiti artist and fanzine creator through into adult
life as a designer, artist and musician.
Film Directed by Dscreet
Soundtrack by Cherrystones
Graphics by Peter & Paul
While you’re there, be sure to head towards the purple window and check out John Martin‘s Painting the Apocalypse exhibition. The end of the world in three massive paintings is the cornerstone of the room (wowing the cities they originally toured in the 1850s), but a detailed look into his ideas and a chronological journey into his life make for quite a deep look into the man. This exhibition is in Sheffield until 4th September.
