AEMS MC is a Newcastle based producer and vocalist who favours hard–edged dubstep sounds, and is a key figure in the longstanding dubstep/DnB club night Turbulence. When he’s not behind the microphone , he’s behind the bar helping to run one of the Toon’s best–loved pubs/venues.
So when did you start doing music and who are the heroes that inspired you?
Started making music and DJing around the age of 13, was massively influenced by old skool rave and jungle like Prodigy, M Beat, Moby, DJ Sy, Slipmatt etc at the time. As i grew up my influences changed and I discovered loads of different music. These days I’m influenced by a lot of different stuff, everything from funk and soul to dubstep and d’n’b….
You’ve recently had a Youtube hit, “We Speak in Geordie Slang – like this”. Could you tell us what inspired this track? Was it the burgeoning Geordie hip- hop scene or is it more of a combination of your own influences?
Haha, its much more simple than that! I’m a big fan of the original track “Slang Like This” by P Money and True Tiger and we just decided one day to do a cover titled – “Geordie Slang Like This”. I got in touch with Sukh Knight, the producer of the original, he sent me the beats, I wrote it and we recorded it shortly afterwards at Coderoom Studios. Superveillance shot a video, we cleared it with True Tiger and they put it out on their website as a free download.
It was more something we did as a tongue in cheek thing really, a bit of a laugh more than anything! It’s a good bit of promo for me and Superveillance too, and hopefully people who checked out the “Slang Like This” video will be more inclined to check out my next vocal track which is on it’s way….
So can you reveal the nature of your next drop? Is it a super-collab , or hush hush, like Arthur Daley’s lock-up?
It’s a collab with two of my favourite MCs at the moment, but you’ll have to wait and see who! The track itself is kind of funky meets dubstep almost. Gonna go down London for filming in August hopefully with a view to getting it out by September if we can…
