Introducing : Paul White

In late 2007, Paul White had the distinction of releasing the first record on One-Handed Music, the on-the-money London label that’s also home to the equally exciting beat merchant Bullion. And now Mr White has the honour of prepping the label’s long-player debut, ‘The Strange Dreams of Paul White’. With 21 tracks in 36 bleary-eyed minutes, it’s an apt title: the record is a narcoleptic dose of dense, psychedelic, instrumental hip-hop that lurches pleasingly from one snatched beat to the next, the occasional half-familiar sample adding to the feeling of déjà vu on vinyl.

Introducing : Paul White

You can sample a track from the upcoming album above, or why not check his site for some pay-what-you-like download action? This is a man we can do business with…

The album features 21 tracks in 40-odd minutes: do you have a short attention span?

I get bored quick and like to try different things... It’s just moods I guess. Like in life, your mood can suddenly change, life can suddenly change in an instant. To me music is the same, like a journey through feelings... I don’t really think about it when I’m doing it!

So are these tracks just about a moment, an idea, a beat, as opposed to songs? You can say all you have to say in the time you say it?

I can never go back and work on a track again. I usually try to do the beats quite quick ’cause I know my mood will be different the next day, if not an hour later. Music’s just like emotions, like a reference to a moment or time in your life, the way you felt.”

What makes up a Paul White track then? Where does a track start?

Listening to old records, just getting inspired! I usually start with drums. It can start with anything, but I always like it raw!

Apart from the obvious ones, where do you find samples?

Anywhere I can - live instruments, videos, TV, mainly old records though!

Do you play any instruments on the album?

Little things but nothing major at all really, the odd keyboard thing, and percussion.

Favourite studio device?

Fun... and at the moment my new MPC3000!

There are no MCs on the album – were you tempted at any stage?

The album to me in my head was just kind of an extension of the beat tapes I do, or another version, so I was really glad I could put out an album of just instrumental beats - but I do definitely really want to work with MCs.

So what MCs do you rate today?

I’m pretty hopeless with names I have to admit, but MED, Elzhi, Phat Kat, Roc C, Guilty Simpson...

Favourite of all time?

I don’t think I really have one favourite of all time, plus my MC knowledge isn’t as good as it should be probably. I grew up skateboarding and listening to Wu and lots of ODB so he’s definitely one of my favourites!

And in terms of producers, who do you rate at the moment?

Bullion, my friends Tightface and SirReal, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Madlilb, Karriem Riggins, Oh No, Kankick.

What is the collective term for a group of people like you, Bullion etc then? What kind of music do you make?

No idea. I don’t really think about it, people who all love making music…? I guess I make instrumental hip-hop. I want to really push it and really experiment. I want to write all types of music. I love sonics and sound!

Is there any significance about the album title, ‘The Strange Dreams Of Paul White’ then?

A little I suppose. I just like having fun and trying weird and funny things in the studio, which feeds into my dreams maybe, which feeds into my music...

If I was being full of shit, I could suggest that there’s a dream-like quality to the tracks: the tracks drift by, with snippets of audio and samples, and there’s a slightly hazy quality to the production… am I full of shit?

Yeah. You could say haze plays a part in my music...

Do you like Boards of Canada? The album reminds me of them in places, sort of…

Yeah, when i was in university, the guys I lived with were really into electronica, and into making it. (They liked) all types of amazing stuff and Boards Of Canada was one of my favourites, I love the raw emotion and atmospheres in their music, it’s a whole world, you feel it!

What’s next for you?

Just finishing another EP, got another white label 7” done, couple of remixes, hopefully some stuff with some MCs. I want to start playing instruments a lot more. I just want to try as much as possible...
