DESCRIPTION:Phat Kat is a Detroit hip-hop pioneer\, in the mid 90s he formed the group 1st Down with the late\, great J Dilla (Jay Dee)\, although the group didn’t last long with 2 releases under their belt\, ‘No Place To Go – 12″ single (1993)’ & A Day Wit’ The Homies EP – 12″ single (1995)\, they continued a tight knit working relationship\, collaborating on the 1999 ‘Dedication To The Suckers’ EP released on House Shows Recordings\, which was completed from scratch in 3 hours flat. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs well as solo releases The Undeniable LP(2003) & Carte Blanche(2007) and the S.O.S Project (2017) with Berlin’s DJ Dister\, Phat Kat has worked with Slum Village\, Black Milk\, Guilty Simpson\, Elzhi and some of my personal favourite tracks with Dabrye and Suff Daddy. The last time I saw him in Manchester was hosting the J Dilla Changed My Life tour in 2013 presented by The Doctors Orders raising money for the J Dilla Foundation & Lupus UK. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe welcome him to The Hip Hop Chip Shop in Manchester alongside Bristol based producer\, MC\, DJ & Host\, Blacksmith who has supported the likes of Lupe Fiasco\, Common and Jurassic 5 as well as releasing music with Skinnyman & Statik Selektah. \n\n\n\nAir Adam is not stranger to the chippy and a longtime contributor to the Manchester scene\, including being co-founder of and DJ at the “Family Gathering” nights as well as the original “Neighbourhood” Hip-Hop and reggae shows\, the producer of a series of mixtapes\, and releasing the Air Adam Podcast monthly since June 2009 – he’ll be taking us on drive through Detroit with a Motor City tribute DJ Set. \n\n\n\nWORKINONIT launched their beat maker social collective at The Hip Hop Chip Shop over 2 years ago providing an invaluable community platform for artists from the UK and abroad to network and showcase their music. DESCRIPTION:RUFF TRADE are an explosion of Roots\, Rock\, Reggae born in 2016 on the streets of Manchester\, UK. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFronted by Mancunian brothers Ryan & Chris RUFF TRADE quickly gained local popularity and they soon hit the studio recording their debut E.P Urban Jungle in 2017\, which was mastered at Abbey Road Studios\, London. \n\n\n\nSince 2017 RUFF TRADE have gigged extensively across the UK performing at many live music venues & festivals hitting the main stages at renown reggae venues including Hootananny Brixton\, One Love Festival\, Beat-Herder\, Party In The Pines & Positive Vibration to name a few.  \n\n\n\nRUFF TRADE have also backed legendary reggae artists such as Prince Hammer\, Dennis Bovell & Keith Poppin among others on festivals and mini tours across the UK all of whom have praised the band highly and recognise RUFF TRADE as an exciting fresh emerging British Reggae talent.  \n\n\n\nOn May 1st 2022 RUFF TRADE were scouted by Terence F Clark\, drummer for international country artist Keith Urban\, explaining to Urban that RUFF TRADE are quote “The Real Deal”. Keith Urban came to MCR city centre to watch the band busk and invited RUFF TRADE to perform during his set on the Manchester leg of his sell out tour “The Speed Of Now Tour 2022”.  \n\n\n\nTwo days later saw RUFF TRADE perform to a sell out Manchester O2 Apollo audience playing 2 tracks\, finishing off with a cover of UB40 classic “Red Red Wine” which Keith Urban joined the band on backing vocals. \n\n\n\nOctober 2022 welcomed the highly anticipated release of RUFF TRADE’s debut album “Mancunian Way”. DESCRIPTION:BLK ODYSSY project is pushed by liberation. On his first album under this new moniker\, titled BLK \n\n\n\nVINTAGE\, BLK ODYSSY―born and raised in Plainfield\, NJ\, based in Austin\, TX― dives into his personal \n\n\n\nhistory as a Black musician and the world he’s grown up around. It’s an album deeply informed by \n\n\n\nindividual experiences but applied to the plight of Black Americans everywhere. Even when the \n\n\n\nalbum chooses smooth vibes and laid back lyrics in favor of overt activism\, there’s a philosophical \n\n\n\nbent that inspires BLK ODYSSY’s work. BLK VINTAGE is inspired by a few key moments and artists. \n\n\n\nThere’s the death of BLK ODYSSY’s brother\, who was killed at the hands of police officers while BLK \n\n\n\nODYSSY was living in New Jersey. It’s the seminal moment of BLK ODYSSY’s life\, the moment he was \n\n\n\nforced to become an adult and reckon with the harsh reality of being Black in America. It fuels \n\n\n\neverything he does\, especially his activism. \n\n\n\nAfter making a name for himself as an Americana musician\, BLK ODYSSY decided to ditch the \n\n\n\npopularity he gained in favor of creating music that would reflect his own experiences and \n\n\n\nworldview. The result is BLK ODYSSY\, and this first project\, BLK VINTAGE\, moves with the urgency of \n\n\n\nan artist finally realizing their true sound. “I want to create something that will be culturally impactful \n\n\n\nfor my people. I want to do something that is impactful on a larger scale\, something that is for groups \n\n\n\nof Black people across the country.” There’s “1980\,” which slinks with the rich funk-soul of artists like \n\n\n\nAnderson .Paak and Knxwledge\, but BLK ODYSSY’s half-rapped cadence is wholly unique and utterly \n\n\n\nintoxicating. The moments of levity hit equally as hard as the work refracted through the trauma BLK \n\n\n\nODYSSY has experienced. Still\, though\, BLK ODYSSY has the rare ability to present multiple sides of \n\n\n\nhimself. “Hang Low” is a sultry love jam\, strutting with velvet harmonies and a bass line straight out \n\n\n\nof the Pino Palladino school of indestructible grooves. \n\n\n\nThe good times occasionally give way to introspection and remembrance\, though. The death of BLK \n\n\n\nODYSSY’s brother makes its way into the powerful “Drinking Good\,” but he balances it with a desire \n\n\n\nto inspire the next generation. “My goal is to connect with the black youth\, and my goal is to connect \n\n\n\nwith my people and speak to them on a level where we can stop suffering from happening\,” he \n\n\n\nexplains. “There’s only so much we can do for the dead. This record asks: ‘How can we stop this from \n\n\n\nhappening again?’” Though the music is deeply tied to BLK ODYSSY’s own identity\, he speaks a \n\n\n\nuniversal music in his language\, one easily relatable for those that want to see a better world. \n\n\n\nNeo-soul artists like D’Angelo and socially conscious MCs like Kendrick Lamar are clear touchstones\, \n\n\n\nbut BLK ODYSSY also takes cues from the celebratory funk of Parliament who also came from \n\n\n\nPlainfield\, on tracks like “Funketology.” “All the musicians that I grew up with are relatives of \n\n\n\nParliament members. We grew up in that culture\, it inspires who we are\,” explains BLK ODYSSY. This \n\n\n\npotent combination of politically-charged street anthems\, party-ready funk jams\, and top-down\, \n\n\n\nhead-nodding beats makes BLK VINTAGE a sterling debut and one of the most powerful and timely \n\n\n\nreleases of the year.
