New music / Sly5thAve: Let Me Ride ft Jimetta Rose

Sly5thAve’s new one is epic. Recorded with a full orchestra, it’s a full-on reimagining (thanks, Tim Burton) of Dre’s classic joint Let Me Ride, swimming in the lush tones of Jimetta Rose. The extended edit is a 15 minute monster, and is the result of a 2015 concert organised by Sly as a benefit aimed to raise funds towards building a music school in Compton. It was here that Dre himself heard Sly’s orchestral tributes for the first time.

When Jimetta’s singing ‘Let Me Ride’ she’s singing ‘let me be, get off my back, stop killing us, locking us up and making money of our backs; stop treating me a certain way’ – that’s how I feel it.

This narrative in vital to Sly’s forthcoming long player on Tru Thoughts, a musical voice against police brutality.

I can’t yet find a streamable link to the single, so check this lo-fi recording of the intro from YouTube for now!

Hip-Hop has always been music for the people. An anthemic account of history from the other side, it gave a much louder voice to a whole generation and class of people who most folks would have liked to ignore.
