ANCHORSONG (Tru Thoughts)
Anchorsong aka Masaaki Yoshida has become globally recognised for his unique live shows, having been compared to “watching a painter drawing on a white canvas”, Yoshida creates electronic music completely live utilizing a sampler (MPC2500) and keyboard, creating the music piece by piece right infront of his audience.
Supporting the likes of Bonobo, Prefuse 73, DJ Krush, Daedelus, Jaga Jazzist and Shigeto has firmly established Anchorsong into the top tier of live beatmakers. Whilst famous mainly for his solo performances, the show is often augmented with a live string section whch takes the spectacle somewhere even more enveloping and atmospheric.
CONTOURS (Rhythm Section)
Straight outta Cumbria, Contours has been on our radar for a while. His production displays a combination of rigid, syncopated synth lines and drum programming, overlaid with dreamy soundscapes, and fluid, organic percussion – sometimes housey, sometimes hip hoppy – but always revealing a passion for drumming, jazz and world music. Based in Manchester, unsurprisingly he’s become a favourite within the So Flute and Banana Hill gangs, and he’s also been getting props from the likes of Mr Scruff, Alexander Nut and Robert Luis. Technician, his debut EP on Rhythm Section, rarely leaves the record bag, and there are new bits coming out this year on Banoffee Pies, On The Corner and others, and we can’t wait.
SLEEPDEBT (This City Is Ours)
Taking inspiration from artists such as Boards of Canada, Gold Panda and Com Truise – Sleepdebt juxtaposes obscure samples, detuned synth pads and organic instruments to create atmospheres equal parts melancholic, sheltering and dissociative. Making his live debut earlier in the night, he will also be doing a more high energy, hip-hop focused DJ set later on.
