Download: BEAUTIFUL SWIMMERS present DON CHERRY // One Handed Music Dedication Series #1

Props to OHM for doing something a little different. Alex Chase’s label is starting up a mix series from their artists and collaborators…

First up are Beautiful Swimmers from Washington D.C. who offer us a glimpse into their love for Don Cherry, the pocket trumpet player who explored everything from traditional Indian music to disco via spiritual jazz, proto-breakbeat and much more. We couldn’t ask for a more brilliant and unusual start to the series.

Each mix will be accompanied by a new illustration by London artist Emily Evans, interpreting the subject of the mix through her own lens.

“The main feeling I got from the mix was that Don Cherry’s music really wasn’t defined by the instrument he plays and that it reflected more his experimental exploration of different types of music. In the photos of him I found there was a transition from suits to really bright clothes, so the bright colours are drawn from his colourful jumpers, which I felt reflected the music in the mix.”

If you like what you see you can find out more about Emily here. If you live in London, she has taken over two walls and a ceiling in the basement of Jaguar Shoes until the end of May, check it if you can.
