On Wax // Egyptian Lover – Anthology 1983 – 1988 {Stones Throw} + Jazz Cafe show

el large

A pioneer of West Coast hip hop with his forward thinking electro, Egyptian Lover is about to have an anthology released by Stones Throw, who have got hold of master tapes of his work from 1983-88.

This is him in 1985, on the bill with World Class Wreckin’ Crew and LA Dream Team:

LA native Egyptian Lover was born Greg Broussard, and is acknowledged across the world as helping bring electro rap to the masses in the eighties.

Heavily influenced by Prince, Kraftwerk, Rick James and Zapp, EL kicked off by compiling mixes of tunes he loved coupled with his own instrumentals on his Roland TR 808. Then, he started rapping over his own beats to take them to the next level. He blew up locally, then couldn’t be stopped.
His dexterity as a producer, DJ and MC saw him sell hundreds of thousands of his own joints on his label EgyptianEmpire.
