The night’s been bigged up by Piccadilly Records and City Life (front page on site today!)… So should be rammed then!

IF the Mancunian summer – which has basically consisted of a few sunny afternoons and several hundred downpours – has left you feeling suddenly blue, like footballer/turncoat Carlos Tevez, you could do worse than brighten things up with a visit to The Roadhouse on Saturday night.

There, on a summer ‘tip’, you’ll find East London tropical head Hugo Mendez on a rare visit to our rainy city.

For the uninitiated, Mendez made his name with the Sofrito parties and label, where his love for all things carnival shone through.

Working with fellow DJs such as Frankie Francis he has created a collective dedicated to sourcing the very best in dancefloor-friendly world beats (ie stuff you can actually dance to, none of that Damon Albarn/Paul Simon-type nonsense) and bringing them back to these shores.

He has also just compiled a release entitled Tropical Funk Experience for Nascente, a role he carried out in addition to his duties masterminding the famed Sofrito Special 12-inches.

Mixing Latin, jazz, African and Samba, as on ‘Mambo con Mendez’, without it sounding like the music you hear in lifts or rubbish restaurants is a skill which should be applauded.

As is bringing a little bit of sunshine to Newton Street. Well worth checking out.
